Can I be hypnotized?


Anyone who has regular cognitive function, and who is willing to be hypnotized, can be hypnotized!


I did Hypnosis before and I don’t think it worked, does that mean it won’t ever work for me?           

Hypnosis can definitely work for you! It is my job to explain to you what will happen in our work together, as well as to find the right approach(es) that will work for you.


Some people dream and drift away during Hypnosis, and do not remember afterward what was said in the session. Because of this, they think it didn’t work. Some people follow along with everything that was said and remember all or most of it, and they also believe that they were not hypnotized because the experience felt so similar to their everyday life experiences. You can feel either of these experiences, or anything in between, and all of them are Hypnosis, and all of them are equally effective!


I have seen people be hypnotized in a stage show, is that the same as Hypnotherapy?


Hypnotherapy and Stage Hypnosis are very different.


Stage Hypnotists are creating a show. They are looking for a certain type of volunteer who is comfortable being put on the spot, and who is willing to do outrageous things. They want entertainment value. Stage Hypnotists do not have care for the people being hypnotized (whether the volunteers have a good experience or not). The Stage Hypnotist is usually a man, who has a loud and commanding voice and an intense stage presence. Stage Hypnotists use Hypnosis, but they use different techniques and for a much different purpose than what is used in Hypnotherapy.


Hypnotherapists use Hypnosis as well, but that’s where the similarities end. Hypnotherapy is about you! In Hypnotherapy, we work together to help you reach your goal(s). I use Hypnosis as a therapeutic technique. I explain my approach as we go along, and I check in with you to make sure you are ok with what is happening. You are always welcome to let me know at any point if you are feeling nervous, unsure or uncomfortable and we will adjust our pace or the approach.


Do I fall asleep in Hypnosis?


Hypnosis can feel like sleep or dreaming to some people, but you are not actually unconscious or asleep.


There are different brainwave levels associated with different states of the mind. When we are awake and doing the activities of everyday life, our brains are at a beta wavelength level. Below that, there are two levels of conscious brain activity – alpha and theta wavelength levels. These are the two levels where hypnosis takes place! The delta brainwave level is below theta and that is where sleep happens.


Will I wake up after Hypnosis?


Hypnosis is a waking state - you are not actually asleep while in Hypnosis – so you will come out of Hypnosis.


What if I do it wrong?


Good news, there is no right or wrong with Hypnosis! Some people follow along with what is being said and some drift away and dream. Both experiences are equally effective. There is nothing you have to do to make it work.


Can you make me do something or say something that I don’t want to in Hypnosis?


It’s not possible. You are aware in Hypnosis, and the main jobs of the Subconscious Mind are to help you and protect you, so you will only take in and act on suggestions that are beneficial to you. You are still you in Hypnosis and there is nothing I could say to you to make you go against your core beliefs and values. I can’t make you do or say something you wouldn’t normally do or say…and I don’t want to!


You can also lie or withhold information in Hypnosis, if you wish. You are in complete control and I want it to be a good experience for you so I am interested in your well-being at all times.


There are experiences in my life that make me very uncomfortable, do I have to “go there”?


Within the sessions, we always go at a pace that works for you, and I respect your boundaries as to what you do and do not want to discuss.


I never have you relive a traumatic event. You have been through it once, you don’t need to go through it again! It may be necessary to refer to an event and explore how it may impact your goal, but I never have you go back into a traumatic event to relive it.
