Behind the Name Arbutus Hypnotherapy
A bit of a topic change for this blog – I wanted to share why I chose to name my practice Arbutus (Hypnotherapy). I had a difficult time coming up with a name on my own. Arbutus was suggested to me by a wonderful family member, and the more I looked into it, the more I fell in love with it.
Bear in mind that these descriptions are the result of a light internet search, and I can’t claim that they are one hundred percent accurate, but I liked the ideas nonetheless.
Arbutus trees are prevalent in this area so I get to be surrounded by my inspiration. The arbutus tree is the only native broadleaf evergreen tree in Canada and I like those deep Canadian roots! Arbutus wood is one of the hottest and longest burning woods around, and I enjoy the image or idea of generating long-lasting warmth. I hope I am able to provide that for my clients.
The branches of an arbutus tree are often twisting and gnarled and I read that this is because the arbutus tree is always moving toward the light. So, if an area of the tree is predominantly in the shade, then its branch will change the direction of growth and seek out the light. I also hope that I can support my clients with this – moving toward the light.
The last reason is that Arbutus Hypnotherapy has the initials AH. And to me, this could be taken two ways. The first is the aaahhhh of relief and relaxation. I hope my clients feel like the work they do with me is a positive relief, and it brings them a measure of relaxation…even if it is just being in the chair for an hour! The second AH is the ah or ah-ha of a realization. This work is so personal and a bit of a journey, and usually along the way a client has at least one moment of connecting some dots in an aspect of his or her life. A moment of clarity about a message or symbol or event from his or her past. It is so cool to see the experience gel for them like that.
I feel so honoured to be able to do this work and to share what Arbutus Hypnotherapy means to me.
